Mulvaney took nearly $700,000 in campaign contributions from the industries he’d regulate at CFPB

According to American Bridge calculations using Center for Responsive Politics data, as a member of the U.S. House, Mick Mulvaney accepted $683,973 in campaign contributions from the financial sector, which the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has regulatory powers over.

While in Congress, Mulvaney Mulvaney said that the CFPB should not even exist, and called the agency a “sick, sad” joke. The 29 million Americans who’ve received almost $12 billion in relief thanks to the CFPB’s enforcement work against financial sector abuses would disagree.

“You couldn’t make this up. Trump’s choice to take over the CFPB, Mick Mulvaney, called the agency a ‘joke’ as he took hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the financial sector it regulates,” said American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates. “Trump has outright admittedhis plan is to cripple this independent watchdog in order to increase Wall Street profits. This is more proof that […]

NEW DIGITAL CAMPAIGN: How Many Thanksgiving Dinners Would Trump’s Tax Bill Cost Middle Class Families?

After Donald Trump held the annual Turkey pardoning, Bridge Project released a new social media graphic, which is being promoted with a digital ad campaign, showing how many Thanksgiving meals could be purchased with the amount of money middle class families would lose to tax hikes if Senate Republicans pass the Trump tax bill.

Using data from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center’s new analysis of the Senate Republican tax plan as well as Thanksgiving dinner pricing information from the American Farm Bureau, Bridge Project determined that, to help cut taxes by $32,000 on average for the wealthiest 1% of earners – and for big business – the Trump-Republican tax plan would raise taxes on most middle class Americans by the cost of over 28 Thanksgiving dinners.

“As families gather all over the country to share Thanksgiving meals together, Donald Trump and Republicans are racing to pass a tax bill that […]

As Trump Lies About Threat To Jobs, Bridge Project Renews Digital Campaign Attacking GOP Tax Plans For Outsourcing

Bridge Project has renewed the buy for a digital ad running nationally on Facebook warning that both the House and Senate Republican tax proposals would kill American jobs by encouraging companies to send them overseas with new tax incentives.  The digital ad, “Trump’s Tax Plan Sells You Out,” exposes that both Republican tax plans would break Donald Trump’s top promise to American voters – that he would protect jobs from outsourcing and bring jobs back to the United States.  Contrary to his promise, these plans charge lower tax rates on foreign profits than domestic profits, which rewards outsourcing.

This comes as Donald Trump blatantly lied about the impact the Republican tax plans would have on American jobs in today’s cabinet meeting.

“Donald Trump is breaking his promise to the country by going all-in on a tax scheme that rewards the outsourcing he swore he could stop,” said American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah. “The tax […]

Sanders Questions: Gaming the System Edition

It’s been nearly two weeks since the first Roy Moore allegations broke, and since then more women have come forward with stories of their own. President Donald Trump has refused to condemn the Republican candidate for Senate, instead saying it’s up to the people of Alabama to decide. It’s become clear that President Trump would rather have tax cuts for the wealthy than protect children from sexual assault.

American Bridge Trump War Room Communications Director Harrell Kirstein calls on White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to answer the following questions:

1. Does the President agree with his counselor Kellyanne Conway that getting votes for tax cuts is more important than an alleged sexual assaulter representing the state of Alabama in the Senate?

2. Is it fair that the Trump administration needs to “game the system” in order to get the votes to pass tax reform, as Budget Director […]

Mnuchin Lies About Raising Middle Class Taxes, Accurately Says Trump Tax Bills “A Huge Boon” To Wall Street

Republicans are tripping over themselves trying to defend the Trump tax bills that raise taxes on middle class and poor families to fund tax cuts for the rich.  Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin (pictured here) admitted to Fox News the Trump proposals would be a “huge boon for the financial services industry”  Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin (pictured here) admitted to Fox News the Trump proposals would be a “huge boon for the financial services industry” moments after lying about how ending the state and local tax deduction would raise taxes on millions of middle class Americans.

This exchange followed Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch yesterday flat-out admitting that putting more money in peoples’ paychecks was “not what we’re trying to do.”

“Just like with healthcare, Republicans are trying to sell their tax plans by lying to the millions of middle class Americans […]

Sanders Questions: Anyone Thirsty? Edition

Donald Trump has returned from Asia, and with him returns everyone’s favorite part of the day: asking Sarah Huckabee Sanders questions she’ll do her best to ignore.

Unfortunately for Team Trump, while he was gone Americans learned all about what the disastrous Republican tax plan will do to the middle class, healthcare, the deficit, American jobs…we could go on.

American Bridge Trump War Room Communications Director Harrell Kirstein hopes she’s got her water bottle cap unscrewed and calls on White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to answer the following questions:

1. Why is Donald Trump going back on his promise to bring back American jobs by supporting a tax package that would encourage corporations to send jobs out of the United States?

2. Following up on that, does he have anything to say to the 36 million middle class Americans whose taxes will go up under his tax plan?

3. Why did President Trump […]

American Bridge statement on Mick Mulvaney potentially leading the CFPB

American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates issued the following statement after it was reported that Donald Trump may appoint Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney to be the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

”Not one month ago, Donald Trump sided with Wall Street and predatory lenders over our nation’s veterans and middle class families by signing a bill that allows banks and other financial companies to escape full legal accountability after defrauding consumers,” said American Bridge spokesperson Andrew Bates. “Now Trump may appoint a temporary head of the agency who does not think the agency should even exist. This is yet another example of Donald Trump acting to sell out the Americans he pledged to stand up for. Like his tax efforts, this would further rig the American economy in favor of the wealthy and large corporations.”

Mulvaney has objected to the existence of the CFPB, which was […]

BREAKING: Republicans Vote To Raise Taxes On Middle Class Americans, Cut Medicare, And Send Jobs Overseas

American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah released the following statement in response to the House passing the Trump tax plan:

“In lockstep with Donald Trump, House Republicans just voted to raise taxes on 36 million middle class Americanscut Medicare by $25 billion, and outsource American jobs – all to cut taxes for the super rich and big corporations.  This is a disastrous plan that sells-out hardworking, average Americans who are counting on jobs and a better economic future.  The country deserves better, and the public will hold these Republicans accountable.”

Yesterday, Bridge Project released a new digital ad running nationally on Facebook, “Trumps Tax Plan Sells You Out,” which highlights warnings that the Republican tax plan would break Donald Trump’s #1 promise and help outsource American jobs he said he would protect.

Economic Experts: To help 1%, Senate Republican tax plan would cost over 13 million Americans health care

24 hours after Senate Republicans added repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate to their tax plan – in order to finance corporate tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest Americans – economic experts are making clear that this would have devastating costs for the middle class.

To permanently cut taxes for big business, Senate Republicans would take healthcare coverage from 13 million Americans, send health insurance markets into chaos, and cause premiums to skyrocket across the board.

On top of these new medical and financial burdens for hardworking Americans, former Obama Administration economic adviser David Kamin explains that, in 2027, $30 billion of corporate tax cuts would be paid for by raising taxes on everyone EXCEPT the richest 1% of Americans.

This comes as Republican Senators are openly admitting that they are rushing to pass this tax bill to please big money donors.

New Digital Ad Blasts GOP Tax Plan for Encouraging Outsourcing of American Jobs

As the House prepares to vote on the Trump tax bill this week, Bridge Project is launching a new digital ad sounding the alarm that the plan would break Donald Trump’s biggest promise by encouraging multinational companies to outsource good-paying American jobs.  The new ad will begin running today on social media networks.

“Donald Trump’s economic policies could not be more at odds with the promises he made on the campaign trail,” said American Bridge Vice President Shripal Shah. “Instead of working on a jobs plan, he’s stacking his administration with lobbyistsand pushing through a tax bill that would send American jobs overseas – and that’s on top of raising taxes on millions of middle class Americans to cut taxes for the rich.  His agenda speaks volumes about who he’s truly looking out for, and […]
